Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Review:
This book changed my life. I was so captivated by this book that I am eager now planning different ways to shove this book to all my friends. This book needs to be heard.

The story is so timely, relevant and important to all Filipino people now (I am not going into this--but if you are a Filipino and you read this book, you will know what I mean). I wish our President and the office of Human Rights will be able read this book.

I have never read an honest and bold book that tackles police violence, racism, gangs and interracial dating with such finesse. I was really moved by this book and I am pretty sure something within me changed. Everyone needs to hear the voice of this book--an eyeopener that surely screams, how unfair the world is.

The writing style for me was so sincere and honest that I really did not have a hard time connecting to the story. The writer (considering this is her debut) for me did an outstanding job on this gem. Her writing style painted personality, color and skills that needs to be recognized and appreciated.

What to Read Next? My To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile: January 2018

1268479Here I am again, caught in the misery created by the almost voided world of "what-to-read-next?". I hate this feeling, the way it slaps you cause you are not doing anything because you are not reading anything as of this moment. The problem is, you want to-- but you don't know what is the perfect book that are you going to read! It is quiet crazy but also fun in a subtle way.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
I have been hearing a lot of good things about this book for weeks now. This book was also recognized by a lot of award giving groups as one of the best contemporary novel of 2017. These are mainly the reasons why this book got my attention and made me pick a copy from our local bookstore. I do have a hardback copy in my hands now and I am still not fully committed to dive in to it. My mind is still under the waters of fantasy and science fiction and I can still feel that my contemporary vibe is still lost out there somewhere wandering like a noob. I just don’t have the interest yet or the mood to read contemporary YA book but at the same time I am very eager to know why The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is hyped up to the top.

Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman
In case you don’t know, I am a big fan of Neal Shusterman. The first book that I have read from him was the Everlost (Skinjacker Trilogy #1) back in high school. I can still remember how I ranted on how awesome that book is to my friends and classmates and it made them hate me. It was funny, but I don’t care because Everlost was so epic that I need the entire world to know that. Lately, I finished Neal’s Scythe book and I was really blown away by it. I have read the boom without knowing what the story is and with very low expectations. I guess by that it really helped the book in blowing my brains out. It was for sure one of my most surprising reads of this year (so far). Now, I wan to experience more of Neal’s dark and haunting world and his thrilling and awesome writing style. I saw a copy of Full Tilt weeks ago on one of our local bargain bookstore and I immediately bought it. Now I am considering reading it even though this is a middle grade book and not a YA.

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
I have heard a lot of good things about Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. I am so thrilled to read these books but unfortunately, I do not have a physical copy yet. As of this moment I still have a pending order on our local bookstore on the Final Empire and I still don’t have a tentative date when will the book arrive in my hands. Because of this excitement I also searched some of Brandon’s crafts and I have found in the bargain book store his stand-alone fantasy novel Warbreaker. I have this book for a while now (3 weeks), but I am still hesitant to grab and read it because I am still deeply and willingly want to start reading Brandon Sanderson’s universe starting on the Mistborn series.

The Magician by Michael Scott
I know, this book is so old. But I have read and enjoyed The Alchemist back in college, so I just want to continue reading the series and get on with the second book, The Magician. I still don’t have any idea why I did not continue the series back then. Maybe I was just too busy in pharmacy school or I don’t know. I guess a series with such a big potential like this will not answer an “I don’t know” answer, so to give justice, I will continue reading it. The main problem is when is that “when”?

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
I only read one book from this author and that is Valiant. I have read it back in high school and I found it very dark and haunting. I even thought that it was the first book of the series. Sadly, it was not since it was Tithe that should come before it. I really did enjoy the darkness of that book and the simplicity of the author’s writing style. Now, her new book is a talk of the town for the past couple of weeks as one of the most anticipated release this year (it was released already, I guess last week) and I want to give it a try. I still don’t have any idea when will the physical copy be available here in our place but if worse comes to worst I might give it a shot through e-book or audiobook.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
I just finished reading Illuminae, the first book of the series, five days ago. I can still smell the awesomeness of that book and I can still feel in my veins the epic and mind-blowing plots that book gave me. I was not prepared reading that book, and I am still suffering an almost “PTSD-like” thing in my life. The third book will come out on March or April, I am not sure, but my soul is screaming that I need to read the second book before the third one comes out. Which I will surely do but as of this moment my brain is not yet ready. I still need to prepare this “entire me” being on an avalanche of epic plots this book prepared for the readers. By the way if you want to check my book review on the first book, Illuminae, please click here.

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
This is one of the only two YA contemporary on my list as of this moment (the other one is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas). Now this book has been part of almost everybody’s best read in the past two years. That, caught my attention and made me want to pick this book. You know, I am not a fan of contemporary novels. I have this stigma that the genre is boring and dragging. I don’t know. But I have read and enjoyed the books like Aristotle and Dante Discovered the Secret of the Universe, Turtles All the Way Down, We Are the Ants and Simon VS. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, which proves that—contemporary ain’t that bad.

That’s it for today guys. I am still going to think which of these books on the list I am going to pick and read next. I just finished by the way reading the Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo hours ago (if you want to read my review just click the book review section at the top) and I guess I want to have a rest on books with dark and cold world. I will just let you know what I will be reading next but if you can leave a suggestion as a comment below, I will totally appreciate it. Thank you!

Book Review: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

“Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favorite flower, your favorite song, your favorite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart.”

It took me almost two years to finish this book. I bought this back in 2016 and from there I did several attempts to pick this but most ended in DNF sessions. I hate this book and I even wondered why I grabbed a physical copy of this at the first place. The grisha universe was not really for me. I hated the shadow and bone book by the author-- and that hate radiates to this book.

I did not expect this book will blow me away. I finished reading this in less than 24 hours. The characters were so well thought of. They really felt real. Reading the book made me feel like I was part of the story--like I am one of the characters. The characters were perfect that I can totally see myself hanging with them-- talking with them while having lunch. It feels like I knew these characters for a very long time now. I love Simon, Nora, Abby, Nick, Leah, Simon's parents and basically all of the characters. I even loved the flawed Martin guy. The emotions conveyed by the characters were so sincere and were delivered flawlessly through every words in the book. I did not really find a hard time connecting to them. All of the characters were interesting and unique. They will surely stick to me for days, weeks or even months.

Review:
I decided to pick this book when I saw the trailer advertised online. I was caught by the idea that of "read-it-before-it-hits-theaters". This is considered I think a classic book and is the first on the time quartet series.  I have mixed reactions of my experience in reading this book. I did not hate it nor like it. I was left feeling 'nah" or "meh" at the last page.

Books I Wish I Own Now: January 2018

22055262I have a lot of books that I own that are unread, but it does not mean that I have to stop buying or adding more to the piles. You see, a book nerd (I am not sure if this is the correct terminology to use) like me---just love books; whether they are read or unread. So this month, I have an "almost long list" of books that I wish I own. I discovered most of these books from the lists of the most favorite books in 2017 of the bloggers I followed recently. I was so curious and excited to unravel the pages of these books when I listened on how good these books are in so many different elements.

The first book in the list is the "The Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab". I've been hearing a lot of rants of how epic this book is-- not just the book but the entire darker shade of magic series also. The only reason why I still don't have these books is that I cannot afford them. I still feel that it will be really unfair for me to buy a brand new paperback copy of a book that cost around 900 php (almost 20 dollars). This price already cost a good quality hard bound copy on most other books. The darker shade of magic series hard bound copy cost around 1300-1500 php (30 dollars), at this amount, I can already buy a total of three brand new paper backs on the other titles.

Book Feature: Thunderhead (Arc of Scythe #2) by Neal Shusterman

33555224Rowan and Citra take opposite stances on the morality of the Scythedom, putting them at odds, in the second novel of the chilling New York Times bestselling series from Neal Shusterman, author of the Unwind dystology.

Rowan has gone rogue, and has taken it upon himself to put the Scythedom through a trial by fire. Literally. In the year since Winter Conclave, he has gone off-grid, and has been striking out against corrupt scythes—not only in MidMerica, but across the entire continent. He is a dark folk hero now—“Scythe Lucifer”—a vigilante taking down corrupt scythes in flames.

Citra, now a junior scythe under Scythe Curie, sees the corruption and wants to help change it from the inside out, but is thwarted at every turn, and threatened by the “new order” scythes. Realizing she cannot do this alone—or even with the help of Scythe Curie and Faraday, she does the unthinkable, and risks being “deadish” so she can communicate with the Thunderhead—the only being on earth wise enough to solve the dire problems of a perfect world. But will it help solve those problems, or simply watch as perfection goes into decline?

In THE BATTLEMAGE, after Fletcher, Sylva, Othello, Cress, and Alice escape from the Orcs into the ether with their demons, they know the danger is far from over. They've landed in the parallel world full of the demons and won't be able to stay alive in the noxious gases without a steady supply of special plant petals they discovered at the Orcs' temple. Unless the ether is much smaller than they think, they'll need to find more petals before they get to an exit portal on the Hominum side -- if they can find one. Also, predators lurk all around: both the larger demons of the ether and the Orcs who cross over into the ether to try to recapture them, flying on their giant Wyverns. The odds of Fletcher and friends making it out of the ether are not good, but what awaits them back home drives them on. The big war with the Orcs rages on, and everyone is needed at the front lines. And Fletcher has offered a new home to the villagers of his hometown in the long-abandoned estate of Raleighshire, the family home he only just learned was his. He needs to train up soldiers to defend it before the Orcs invade.

If they fail, the orcish armies will rise to power beyond anything the Empire has ever seen.
With loyal friends Othello and Sylva by his side, Fletcher must battle his way to the heart of Orcdom and save Hominum from destruction…or die trying.

Review:
This book is an epic continuation to the Novice-- a child of Pokemon and Lord of the Rings!
I really loved the first book. It was so magical and amazing that I was excited to read this one.
Well, all those excitement were not put to waste and was justified. This book is beyond amazing! Again, the author blew me away.
The characters were not that strong and few new ones were introduced. They need to be polished but regardless of these imperfections they are still memorable. The characters continued to deliver strong emotions and never failed to connect to me -- even the new ones.

As the pieces on the board maneuver for supremacy, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie. The fate of an empire is in his hands. The Novice is the first in a trilogy about Fletcher, his demon Ignatius, and the war against the Orcs.

Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well crafted and creative, that readers like me, cannot stop talking about it to his friends. The book started in a dark and cold world with this lay back and simple life of villagers. The world was introduced by hunting animals and being bullied by unlikable characters. The book started humbly and that is one of the reasons why I love it. The world building was not dragging and the characters were well thought of.
